Filling the Post-Exam Void: A Top 5

Exams are now over – rejoice! But wait. What do you do now? Emily Vine picks out 5 top time filling ideas…

About 3 – 4 days after your exams finish, you may find yourself growing weary of existing predominately within a duvet cocoon, dribbling and watching all previous episodes of Game of Thrones. You may feel the need to peel yourself out of the imprint that you’ve carved into your mattress, and reach the decision that having a shower has become not just something you should get round to, but a pressing need. You may even conclude that leaving the house at some point would be advantageous, even if just to remind yourself what the three dimensional world looks like. If you do decide to go out and about and make the most of your last few days in Exeter, here are some of the best places to go and things to do now that you have the time.

Underground Passages

If you haven’t been, seriously go, it’s great. Although definitely DO NOT GO if you are abnormally tall, in any shape or form claustrophobic or have personal space issues. Enjoy a cold, damp, and dark meander through the subterranean world below the high street, and pay attention to the tour guide surreally pointing out when you are directly beneath Ann Summers and the gardening section of Waterstones.

Explore the Quayside

There’s a lot more to the quayside than Cellar Door and The Waterfront. Spend an afternoon browsing through the endless paraphernalia of the Antiques Centre and the various craft shops, punctuated with regular breaks as you crawl along the waterside from cafe to pub. You could even experience the delights of the Butts ferry (nope, nothing funny there), and allow yourself to be hauled across the river in the company of a ferryman who is hopefully not related to Hades in any way.

Walk down Parliament Street

Ok, this is not exactly an activity to fill an afternoon. But this little alleyway off the high street claims to be the narrowest street IN THE WORLD, and on that basis alone, it’s worth a quick scuttle down just so you can say “wow it really IS narrow…” Take the opportunity to pose for a few photos in which you and your friends marvel at just how implausibly narrow it is, and then be sure to publish said photos through several different social media platforms so that everyone knows just how much fun you had.

…Or why not escape Exeter and venture further afield:

Totnes

Totnes is an attractive old town packed full of listed buildings, arty independent shops and quaint cafés; it has its own currency and it’s very cool. It’s so cool that it took on Costa and won. It’s definitely worth a day-trip if you want to escape the clone-town chain stores of Princesshay, experience an authentic Devon cream tea in a doily-filled Dickensian tea shop or simply soak up a marginally more refined atmosphere.

 Croyde

Just about do-able in a day, Croyde is a wonderful little surfing village hidden away on the North Devon coast. It takes both a train and a bus ride to get there, but the glorious sandy beach and relaxed surfing vibe make it seem a world away from Sidwell Street: something I think we can all agree is a good thing. With two – TWO – ice cream parlours, a couple of friendly pubs and surf shops galore, it’s a compact but fantastic place for a mini beach getaway.
