Golden Globes 2014: Fashion Round-up

Forget the films, music-scores and awards, this year’s Golden Globes was all about one thing (well, as far as we here at Expose Fashion are concerned anyway!), the dresses. From Taylor Swift to our very own and very lovely Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary), the stars came out in force for the 71st annual ceremony to show off their fashion credentials, and boy did they succeed. Not only was the fashion simply divine darling but we here in good old England have cause to be just a little bit proud as the red carpet was absolutely rocked by the British actresses in attendance (not that we’d ever be biased in such important matters). So, here at Expose, we attentively watched the proceedings in order to bring all you fashion-lovers the top five outfits from the night and aren’t there some stunners…

Emma Watson – Dior

Never one to play it safe when it comes to fashion, or for that matter look anything less than pristine, Watson once again showed the fashion world how it’s done in this elegant yet daring Christion Dior backless red gown, paired with silk cropped trousers and matching Rover Vivier navy pumps. What an outfit, what a girl.

Taylor Swift – Carolina Herrera

Yet another lady in red, Taylor Swift opted for a sophisticated and chic look with this strapless Herrera dress. Combining her stunning dress with beautiful soft curls and a touch of red lipstick Swift was without a doubt the queen of the red carpet this year.

Michelle Dockery – Oscar de la Renta

We’ve loved both Dockery and la Renta for rather a long time now so when the two came together in this absolute triumph of a look, we very almost cried tears of pure joy (we held back of course, we’re grown-ups silly!). This off-white sequined dress complimented Dockery’s pale skin giving her a gorgeous glow and the mullet-hem allowed her to show off just a little bit of leg. Fab!

Dame Helen Mirren – Jenny Packham

dailymail.co.uk
dailymail.co.uk

British fashion royalty, Helen Mirren rarely puts a foot out of place when it comes to the red carpet and this year’s Globes was no exception. In a mint floor-length gown covered in glittery floral-designs and cinched at the waist to flatter her incredible figure the Dame didn’t look a day over fifty in this exceptional outfit. We, on the other hand, can only pray we look this good at sixty-eight!

Zoey Deschanel – Oscar de la Renta

thefashionsupernova.com
thefashionsupernova.com

Although causing some contention (some loved, some hated, we yawned), here at Expose we were completely smitten with Deschanel’s metallic two-piece from designer of the night – Oscar de la Renta. Although the detailed embroidery and beading of the outfit could have ended up looking overly cutesy, the kooky star of sitcom New Girl managed to pull off this tricky combo and look ridiculously gorgeous in it. Could she be our new fashion crush of 2014? Only time will tell…

Iona Swannell

Fashion Fridays: The New Year Swap

According to Coco Chanel “A woman who has changed her hair is about to change her life”. I swapped my long brown hair for a blonde chop this New Years and by jumping on this ‘clueless’ bandwagon I bought myself a fluffy pink coat and tartan skirt to finish off the look. I may have taken this ‘New Year, new start’ nonsense to the extreme, so here are a few subtle New Year Swaps you fashionista’s should have in mind!

SWAP – Long Hair For The Midi

NEED PHOTO CREDIT Elle Style Awards 2012 - London
Alexa Chung, Huffingtonpost.co.uk

Gone are those days of long luscious locks, if you really want pull a fashion statement go for a blunt chop. Think Alexa Chung and Suki Waterhouse, use salt spray to have that tousled bed head look or go sleek with straighteners.

SWAP – Baggy Parkas For A Boyfriend Tailored Coat

Coat, £89 Topshop.com
Coat, £89 Topshop.com

I know we are now located in Devon and these storms seem to washing us all the way down Forum Hill but when the weather is nice and crisp, put away that parka and let your shoulders triumph in an oversized Tailored coat. Go a step further by ditching the boring greys and blacks and picking up a pastel coat from the High street. It will brighten up any third year’s Monday morning (Trust me- anything helps!).

SWAP – Low Necks For High Necks

High Neck, £22, Asos.com
High Neck, £22, Asos.com

It’s getting a little chilly and you’ve forgotten your scarf- but do not fear, you have a high neck on! This easy swap not only keeps you nice and toasty but it will definitely transform any look. Add a cute little pendant and put your hair up to show your style off.

SWAP – Flats For Platforms

Vagabond, £70, Office, Photo Credit – Sophie Lloyd

Avoid getting your feet wet by swapping your flats for platforms. Not only can you walk through puddles and satisfy that little child in you but it will also enhance the length of your legs. Think 60’s mod and Spice Girls and stick to block colours. Cut out boots have also been my favourite fashion addition this season, as you can jazz your shoes up with funky little socks.

SWAP – Chunky Necklaces For Delicate Pendants

Neclace, £10, Urbanoutfitters.com
Neclace, £10, Urbanoutfitters.com

It’s all about being minimal around your face with jewellery this season. Gold or silver, just do not go over the top with jewels. Keep it simple by digging out that little pendant your grandmother gave you as a kid and stealing your mothers silver hoops. Of course, this is not the case with your rings. ALWAYS think phoebe from ‘Friends’ when decorating your hands.

SWAP – Skinny Jeans For Mom Jeans

Mom Jeans, £75, Americanapparel.net
Mom Jeans, £75, Americanapparel.net

Skinny jeans have and always will be fashionable but they do get a little tiresome. Swap these for some curve hugging mom jeans. If you have been slacking on the squats this month and are worried that your bum doesn’t look perky enough and your waist isn’t as small as it once was, then mom jeans are an absolute winner. Extremely high-waisted, they rest on the most flattering part of your stomach and then have a slight bagginess to enhance your gorgeous curves.

SWAP – Snap Back for The Beanie:

Screen shot 2014-01-11 at 20.44.34

Now I am not one to go against your choice of hat. I know very well that choosing a hat to suit your face shape can be a tricky situation. However, if you are one of those lucky people who have a face shape that suits all then why not try out the beanie. Borrowing from the 90’s again, however this time from the grunge trend. Team with your mom jeans and chunky boots to really look like you’ve stepped back about 20 years in time.

Campus Cool

So I chose the wrong day to scout for you fashion conscious Exeter students. I chose a Wednesday! The only day the Forum is packed full of stash. Although this proved a difficult task, I managed to weave my way through the tennis rackets and hockey sticks to find those who made no excuse to show off their fabulous wardrobe.

Style: The Mod.

Antione shows Exeter what it means to have bravura. His vintage coat, New Era hat and Kooples chinos bring together a unique style that has every fashionista turn their heads. This is a boy who knows where to shop and how to create a style that is exclusive to him. The little details like rolling up your trousers and having that top button done up give him that sought after ‘mod’ look. He is definitely one to take tips from.

Teaming black skinny jeans, a plain white T and smart Zara jacket, Lydia puts her accessories to the forefront. Her leopard print shoes and gold studded Alexander Wang bag (which sent my jealousy raging) add just enough bling to create a style that is sexy and sophisticated.

Sporting his bright Young Ones jumper with casual Levi’s and adidas trainers, Toby plays it casual by hiding his “Mr Cool” T shirt underneath. Kooky logos and bold prints are a great way to stand out on campus and rep that 80’s fashion that is a must have boys this season.

Keeping it safe, Alex teams a faded checked shirt of greens and reds with cream chinos. His worn-in adidas trainers just add to this cool effortless style. However, this seems to be a deceiving tool as he insists that he is wearing an Ann summers thong underneath. Watch out ladies- this boy is not what he seems!

And What I Wore!  Style: The ‘mom’ trend.

I’m absolutely in love with my new American Apparel high waited “mom” jeans. However, it’s pretty hard to feel sexy in these. So instead, I popped on a white crop top and converse to keep it casual and made my statement a floral Zara bomber jacket to add a little colour. Yes, I really did feel like a mother on a school run today.

Lifestyle Round Up: The Student Lock-In

Ben Gilbert rounds up the hugely successful Student Lock-In 2013…

On Wednesday 2nd October, thousands of students flocked to Princesshay for the annual Student Lock-In. The question is – were you one of them? If you were, then you were one of nearly 4,000 students who attended the event.

But would you believe it, that’s relatively small compared with Student Lock-Ins in the 31 other cities involved in the event – Cardiff saw up to 28,000 students all claiming discounts!

In it’s third year running, the Student Lock-In offered many attractions, not least the countless discounts and promotions supplied by shops and restaurants. (For a full list of participating businesses, click here). There really was something for everyone, especially when it came to the Candy Kittens pop-up shop – whether you were there for the products or the photo booth, there was always attention on that stand. Jamie Laing, owner of Candy Kittens and star of Made in Chelsea, was sadly not able to attend and share the fun due to filming, despite being expected.

On top of that, 7.30 at Strada saw 10 brave men attempt a pizza eating contest in the name of charity, where the winner would earn free pizza for 6 months! …If they could stomach it after the gruelling 15 minutes that is.

What's Your Fresh New Style On Campus?

Lifestyle would like to introduce you to our newest columnist, Sophie Lloyd, as she shares with us her thoughts on the Exeter fashion scene week by week.

New year? New style? As I hiked up the forum hill completely out of breath this afternoon, I was distracted by how many different styles Exeter university students have to offer. For those of you who haven’t quite decided your style yet, or for those who fancy a change, I have raided my own wardrobe to show how easy it is to be a fashionista on a budget by laying down some  fashion ‘essentials’ for the most common styles you’re guaranteed to spot on campus.

Geek Chic

This has got to be the quirkiest of them all. A certain confidence is definitely needed to make this look ‘intelligent’ but sexy. The ultimate must-have accessory  is a pair of those thick-framed glasses! Be sure to pair them with a bold patterned shirt buttoned to the top and a cute skirt or skinny jeans. Alternatively, denim dungarees are a great way to create a fashion statement whilst being super comfortable at the same time. So what if you spend all your time in the library? That doesn’t mean you’re not an Exeter fashionista!

Hipster

This look is all about looking effortlessly cool in as many colours, symbols and dyes as possible. Influenced by the late 80’s and 90’s, you can honestly achieve some great fashion inspiration by looking back at your childhood photos. Remember your red velvet scrunchy as a kid? Well, its time to dust it off.  Ask your brother or dad if he has kept any of his Reebok jumpers, this style is great for a student on a budget! Of course, we love Obey and Urban Outfitters’ updated ‘Urban Renewal’ section for clothes are a little more modern but it’s still a fab idea to try out local hidden vintage shops. Think bright, bold and fun! Don’t forget to crazy on those accessories.

Girly

Floral prints, pastel colours and delicate accessories are easy ways to instantly achieve this look. This traditional style is one that seems to never go out of fashion. Looking back to the 40’s and 50’s, the classic floral dress or high-waisted skirt paired with a plain shirt was one that always won gentlemen’s hearts. How about having a modern twist? Cut out dresses are all the rage with a cheeky little bit of skin showing. Stick to the delicate jewellery but if you’re feeling adventurous, why not add some chunky boots or leather studded flat forms to create a hybrid of ‘grunge- chic’. This is a style that can never go wrong. Go on – embrace the girly girl in you!

Street

This look is perfect for those girls who appreciate the sporting fashion, but are tired of constantly wearing stash to lectures. Again, with inspiration taken from the 80’s or 90’s, retro basketball or football tops are a head turner. Nike, Adidas and even River Island are really embracing this style right now, mixing bright logos with witty sayings, this look projects a fun and rebellious feel to sport. Always make these shirts the main attraction, wear with plain skinny jeans or your favourite pair of Levi’s and then add abit of bling with a chunky gold necklace. Keep it retro with a pair of your dirty high top Converse or go all out with your new Reebok classics or funky Air Max trainers.

READY TO FROCK AND ROLL? Part 2: The Women

In part 2, Emily-Rose Rolfe, Lifestyle editor, tears up the girls’ style guide and rewrites the dress.

Gentlemen, you have absolutely nothing to complain about. The fit of your suit is the sole breaking point, and black tie events are in the palm of your hand for the next five years. You can put new bow ties, waistcoats and cufflinks on a birthday or Christmas list so there’s always variation in your photo stream.

Ladies, on the other hand. The dictators of fashion have decreed that one must never wear a dress twice, and with more assortment within the evening dress department than a Wilkinsons pic ‘n’ mix, it’s hard to pin down a dress that treads the line between flattering and reasonably priced. With an array of fashion trends to choose from, it’s easy to make yourself stand out from the crowd for the wrong reasons.

The black tie rulebook of 19th century Britain was strict and uniform; women wore ankle length sleeveless dresses with gloves, evening shoes, and a stole. In 21st century Exeter, we have unanimously decided to rip the rulebook up. Holland Hall Summer Ball 2012 dresses varied between floaty cotton, bottom-skimming bodycon, and full-length satin gowns. Some girls wore flat pumps, others skyscraper heels that were swiftly kicked off when the award ceremony was over. The only continuity was the Exeter staple of flawless complexions and understated cosmetics.

One law that I live by was decreed by Coco Chanel: the best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you. And to remember that black isn’t a colour. It is a widely believed but complete myth that a little black dress flatters every one, no matter how much or little effort you put in. There is a reason black dresses are worn to funerals – without embellishment they’re deadly and monotonous. They make even the sparkiest individuals fade into the background (unless it has a slit as high as Angelina Jolie’s, at which point you’ll have countless men dedicated to your right leg). Thus, if you’re feeling too depleted by exams and want to opt for the safe place, give your classic dress a twist with an unusual beauty look, and a shiny new pair of shock factor shoes (see Dolce & Gabbana for shoe-spiration).

The tenth commandment is ‘Thou shalt not covet thy neighbours possessions.’ Fashion follows this instruction – the biggest fashion houses were built on their own foundations. They didn’t borrow someone else’s bricks or builders, but made a new norm. You should follow suit (literally). If the rulebook is already in the depths of Russia, why don’t you wear a ladies tuxedo? Add a slash of red lipstick, false lashes, and stilettos to a well-cut suit to display your feminine allure without showing your feminine parts. If your courage and male housemates don’t allow you to step out in a Saville Row suit, then simply don’t ask your friends what they are wearing. It’s a novel idea, perhaps against our gender’s instinct, but it means that you’ll walk into the event in an outfit that exudes your individuality rather than a pack mentality.

Emily-Rose Rolfe, Lifestyle Editor

READY TO FROCK AND ROLL? Part 1: The Men

Tim Bradbeer gives guys a top hat and tail coat guide for dressing at formals.

My female friends often whine to me how easy it is for men. Ball season comes along, and while women have to stress and worry about what dress to wear, us men get to sit back and relax, knowing exactly what to wear. Easy.

Well you would think this is the case, but the number of times I have seen guys going to an event with a clear black tie dress code, wearing jeans, or a bright blue suit, or no tie at all is unacceptable It’s really frustrating because what to wear and what not to wear for men is so easy, but people still manage to get it wrong.

Now I am all for the metrosexual revolution (having died my hair ginger – intense mango, to be precise – to the disgust of my friends, I am certainly not one to advocate fading into a crowd), but there is a time, a place, and a way to stand out without looking a twat. Maybe get a funky bow tie, a flower for the button hole etc, but when an event clearly states what to wear, not doing so is just frankly rude. If you want to wear chinos, go to Arena, not Buckingham Palace.

As we all seem to live in Exetaaah, it would be easy to see this as a class issue. Some could view male dress codes as a design to out-price the majority of men, in order to keep a ‘quality’ clientele. I disagree with this wholeheartedly; it is not an issue of class or money, but rather of knowledge. Most of the black tie faux-pas I have witnessed in Exeter have been at some of the ‘rah-iest’ events of the year, showing that ‘perceived’ class has nothing to do with it. My dinner jacket is from Marks and Spencer for goodness sake (and washable too!).

All that men need to look fashionable, smart, sexy and, most importantly, appropriate for the occasion, is a little guide to what each dress code really means. And here it is! (You can thank me later)

SMART CASUAL:

Chinos, shirt, no tie, NO JEANS.

SMART:

Suits (like you’d wear to work) and ties.

JACKET AND TIE:

This one’s obvious, but do make sure you don’t just wear a suit. Wear chinos, a tie and some sort of stand-alone jacket (sport, tweed, herringbone, etc).

BLACK TIE:

Black dinner jacket (Americans call this a tux), a bow tie (any colour you like), BLACK trousers, BLACK shoes. This one is the easiest but also the one men get the most wrong.

And for those really special occasions, they should push the boat out!

MORNING SUITS:

A morning suit (jacket with tails), top hat (optional).

WHITE TIE:

(This is the equivalent of morning suit but worn during the evening).

Jacket with tails, white bow tie, white waistcoat, wing collar shirt. Tiaras, crowns and military honours also would be nice as an addition if owned.

So, there it is. Now the summer is here, go out, look great, don’t look like a twat – top hat optional.

First Grade Fashion

You have an exam. Why not look great at the same time? Milly Hindle shows you how to dress to impress in the exam hall…

ALONG with our concentration spans, exam season weather seems to fluctuate just when we wish it wouldn’t. You head to the cloud-covered library in a slobby jumper, only to break into a sweat as you lug your Norton Anthology down Forum hill in blazing sunshine. Spring study fashion is often a tricky one, re-opening the on-going debate of comfort vs. classy styling. Why not revolutionise revision gear this exam season, by finding a way to combine these two necessities?

 Step One: The Positive POP!

Neons, florals, Aztec prints. Dig out your brightest and most summery glad rags and wear them, even if the day is grey. Studies have shown that bright colours promote a positive mental attitude, whilst your memories of wearing that cute printed cami to the beach last year will spur you on through your library day with thoughts of the summer to come!

Step Two: Think Floaty and Flattering.

With warmer weather on its way, layering is key to comfort. The Forum study rooms may have temperature sensing windows, but I am yet to be convinced of their reliability. Loose chiffons, boyfriend fit shirts and draped tank tops can be teemed with a warmer cardigan, whilst effectively concealing that food baby you’re now nurturing after a pre-exam chocolate binge!

 Step Three: A Cheeky Cover-Up.

All hail the maxi skirt! Can’t be bothered to shave your legs when you’re already getting up at seven to bag your spot in the library? Float through the Forum like an ethereal beauty in this wonderful, leg-lengthening creation.

 Step Four: The Vibrant Varnish.

Paint your nails! There’s nothing so time consuming as nail art when you need a bit of procrastination. Slather your fingertips in a glossy summer glow (my favourite is Chanel’s Orange Fizz!) and admire them as you scribble away – one never spends so much time staring at their hands as when making revision notes!

If all else fails, borrow your boyfriend’s trackies as a last resort. Anything Kukri with a sports logo emblazoned on it will convince all those around you that you’re about to hit the gym after some hard-core revision. Who would guess that you haven’t exercised in years?
