What's Your Fresh New Style On Campus?

Lifestyle would like to introduce you to our newest columnist, Sophie Lloyd, as she shares with us her thoughts on the Exeter fashion scene week by week.

New year? New style? As I hiked up the forum hill completely out of breath this afternoon, I was distracted by how many different styles Exeter university students have to offer. For those of you who haven’t quite decided your style yet, or for those who fancy a change, I have raided my own wardrobe to show how easy it is to be a fashionista on a budget by laying down some  fashion ‘essentials’ for the most common styles you’re guaranteed to spot on campus.

Geek Chic

This has got to be the quirkiest of them all. A certain confidence is definitely needed to make this look ‘intelligent’ but sexy. The ultimate must-have accessory  is a pair of those thick-framed glasses! Be sure to pair them with a bold patterned shirt buttoned to the top and a cute skirt or skinny jeans. Alternatively, denim dungarees are a great way to create a fashion statement whilst being super comfortable at the same time. So what if you spend all your time in the library? That doesn’t mean you’re not an Exeter fashionista!

Hipster

This look is all about looking effortlessly cool in as many colours, symbols and dyes as possible. Influenced by the late 80’s and 90’s, you can honestly achieve some great fashion inspiration by looking back at your childhood photos. Remember your red velvet scrunchy as a kid? Well, its time to dust it off.  Ask your brother or dad if he has kept any of his Reebok jumpers, this style is great for a student on a budget! Of course, we love Obey and Urban Outfitters’ updated ‘Urban Renewal’ section for clothes are a little more modern but it’s still a fab idea to try out local hidden vintage shops. Think bright, bold and fun! Don’t forget to crazy on those accessories.

Girly

Floral prints, pastel colours and delicate accessories are easy ways to instantly achieve this look. This traditional style is one that seems to never go out of fashion. Looking back to the 40’s and 50’s, the classic floral dress or high-waisted skirt paired with a plain shirt was one that always won gentlemen’s hearts. How about having a modern twist? Cut out dresses are all the rage with a cheeky little bit of skin showing. Stick to the delicate jewellery but if you’re feeling adventurous, why not add some chunky boots or leather studded flat forms to create a hybrid of ‘grunge- chic’. This is a style that can never go wrong. Go on – embrace the girly girl in you!

Street

This look is perfect for those girls who appreciate the sporting fashion, but are tired of constantly wearing stash to lectures. Again, with inspiration taken from the 80’s or 90’s, retro basketball or football tops are a head turner. Nike, Adidas and even River Island are really embracing this style right now, mixing bright logos with witty sayings, this look projects a fun and rebellious feel to sport. Always make these shirts the main attraction, wear with plain skinny jeans or your favourite pair of Levi’s and then add abit of bling with a chunky gold necklace. Keep it retro with a pair of your dirty high top Converse or go all out with your new Reebok classics or funky Air Max trainers.

Raving With The Fresh… How To Get The Most Out Of First Year!

Charlotte Trefusis helps you get the most out of your first year, starting with Freshers’ Week…

FRESHERS’ Week is said to be the best week of the year. With the student loan coming in, no work (yet!), loads of activities and nights out, it’s the perfect way to start university. But how can you make sure that it lives up to this expectation?

1. Moving in is both exciting and entering into the unknown.

Get posters and photos on your walls early on, but then get yourself out there, and don’t stay in your room too much. Hang out in the kitchen or communal area and get to know each other.

2. You’ll find when walking around in freshers week that everyone already looks like best friends.

This isn’t true – that’s probably what you look like to everyone else too…

3. Keeping your door open during your first few weeks makes you more approachable.

It’s fine to want a bit of time to yourself too – everyone does, so don’t feel guilty for going to relax for a bit.

4. Try and remember your flat mates names early on.

Don’t make the mistake of asking what someone’s name is and then not listening to the answer.

5. Nights out are a big part of freshers’ week.

It’s a really good opportunity to meet new people and to bond with your new flat mates.

6. It is definitely worth buying tickets in advance of the night for freshers’ week.

But wait until you find out which wristband your flat mates have bought.

7. Girls – Don’t be too keen, wear flats. Exeter is covered in hills and heels are rarely worn on nights out.  The welcome team (pictured) will be hanging around clubs and campus in pink t-shirts to help you, so ask them if you need advice.

You won’t regret it.

9. Don’t go TOO wild in Freshers’ Week, as first impressions really do count. And try not to be that person that spends their entire student loan in one week…

10. Get involved in societies.

There are around 200 of them so you’re bound to find at least one that interests you! Get along to the Freshers’ fair and get signing up. There are many taster sessions in Freshers’ Week. This is your chance to do it free before you commit, and a good opportunity to invite people to try something out with you.

11. There is free stuff everywhere, so don’t hold back

Take everything you can get! Especially 2 for 1 pizza vouchers… They will be useful all year!

Exeposé Exclusive – KINK.

Music lovers, take note, Exeter’s live music scene is changing for the better. It’s time to bid farewell to the chart yawnfests and welcome an exciting fresh take on the student night out as KINK, a new bi-weekly student night, takes to the floor at Exeter’s own Cavern Club. Founders Lewis Lawrence and Cam Jones are giving Exeposé Music the exclusive low-down on something that’ll get the whole town talking.

So, what’s the deal? KINK will bring great, up and coming live bands and DJs from all over the UK down to Exeter to provide a student night like no other, and a window into the future of national music. Artists from genres ranging through pop, indie rock, post punk, synth pop and everything in-between will descend upon Exeter’s most intimate live music venue every other Wednesday. The founders have found a gap in the market for students and are keen to fill it with something for everyone.

While nights like Thick as Thieves, Exit, and Our House ensure Exeter’s live dance music scene is growing faster than the queue for Cheesy Tuesday’s, there has been a lack of intimate student-focussed live music on a regular basis. But the guys over at KINK promise to redress the balance.

Aiming to combine the aesthetics of student living – cost and strength – KINK will provide student prices for some of the most promising live acts around as well as offering an alternative to Timepiece’s regular Wednesday slot.

KINK have already lined up an impressive array of acts to get your mouth watering and knees trembling. Newcastle based quartet, Mausi, will have the pleasure of popping KINK’s cherry at the launch party on October 9th. Mausi are currently on Radio 1’s September playlist and you can hear their track ‘Move’ here. Wolf Alice, pop rockers from North London, will head up October’s second show on the 23rd and are currently touring with indie stalwarts Swim Deep.

Exeposé Music is undeniably excited by this prospect and has high hopes that this will change Exeter’s music scene for the better, providing a musical pluralism you could previously only dream of.
