Exeposé has been shortlisted for the legendary ‘Student Publication of the Year’ prize in the Guardian Student Media Awards 2013 – the first time the paper has been nominated for such an award in over five years.
Your student newspaper fought off tough competition from scores of publications and was voted by a panel of Britain’s biggest editors, which included Guardian chief Alan Rusbridger, as one of the top five student newspapers in the UK.
The judging panel also included Archie Bland, deputy editor of The Independent, Sarah Baxter, deputy editor of The Sunday Times and editor of its magazine supplement, Lisa Smosarski, editor of Stylist magazine and Jonathan Grunn, editor of the Press Association. The Guardian’s website says that judges were on the look-out for a “student newspaper that has achieved the perfect balance of news, features and exciting ideas-driven editorial that keeps its audience coming back for more.
“We want risk takers who stand out from the crowd”, it added. Tom Payne, who co-edited the paper with Zoe Bulaitis last year, said it was a “perfect end to a fantastic year for the paper.
“In the 2012/13 editorial year we launched our website, re-designed the paper and set about investigating and breaking big stories. There was always a huge buzz on campus whenever the paper came out.
“The nomination is a real tribute to our talented and committed team of editors, designers and photographers, who all worked long and hard to produce an outstanding and innovative edition of the paper each and every fortnight.
“It makes all those late, often highly stressful nights editing in the media suite completely worthwhile – and I hope it’s the first of many more award nominations for this humble student newspaper.”
In 2012/13, Exeposé received praise for its student safety campaign, and attracted national media attention for its coverage of the Safer Sex Ball controversies. The paper also ran with investigations into cocaine use on campus and the University’s dodgy donors.
Exeposé previously won the NUS Award for ‘Best Student Newspaper’ in June 2008, although the last time it won a Guardian Student Media Award was in 2000, when the paper took home an award for its campaign against domestic services.
The senior editorial team from 2012/13 will all attend the Guardian Student Media Awards Ceremony at the paper’s head office in London on 27 November, where the overall winner and runner-up will be chosen.
