Welcome Team Profile: Cambria Bailey-Jones

If you so much as stepped out of your house this past Freshers’ Week, you can’t have missed seeing Welcome Team members bounding about campus.

These pink-clad heroes are responsible for looking after Exeter students during Freshers’ Week, doing everything from guiding students around campus to helping them get home on a night out.

Name: Cambria Bailey-Jones

From: Bristol

Role on Welcome Team: Cornwall House Team member (and first time Teamer!)

Subject and year: Third year psychology

First year accommodation: JOC

Explain why you joined Welcome Team: I have such a wonderful time working with the Students’ Guild, and I wanted to let others know what it is all about. The lovely people are a bonus too!

Describe yourself in three words: Bubbly, excitable, determined.

Favourite Freshers’ Week moment: Trying to convince a guy asleep on the gravel in his front garden that his bed would, most definitely, be more comfortable! (This was after a 5 minute song and dance to find his key. It was in his pocket).

Society recommendations: XTV. It’s awesome.

Favourite Ram basket meal: Veggie bites and curly fries. The vegetables make it healthy, right?

Give you three top pieces of advice to freshers:

1. Join a society – or lots of societies. I can, without a doubt, say that most of my best friends at university have been made through my society. And they are great fun!

2. Talk to everyone, and keep trying to meet new people throughout your time at Exeter. Knowing lots of people will make your life so much more interesting.

3. Make the most of every experience you can as a student. You will probably never find this many amazing opportunities in the same place again!

And lastly, favourite fun fact:

Exeter is very close to a donkey sanctuary. Donkeys are cool.

Name: AnhViet Huynh (just Viet is fine)

From: Vietnam

Role on Welcome Team: I’m not entirely sure but it would be something like International Welcome Team staff support (after 3 years with the team, this is my 4th year in the Welcome Team)

Subject and year: Already finished studying…(scary!)

First year accommodation: Lafrowda

Explain why you joined Welcome Team: I just remembered where and what I would have been, had there not been any Welcome Team member in Exeter when I first arrived and I hope the welcome team will always be there every Welcome Week. Also, it is such a great opportunity to work with the amazing bunch of greenies/pinkies and to meet students from all over the places.

Describe yourself in three words: Around, chatty and international

Favourite Freshers’ Week moment: Heathrow time!!!

Society recommendations: Basketball society

Favourite Ram basket meal: Chicken bites, let’s go get some shall we?!

Give you three top pieces of advice to freshers:

1. Make your room your home. It doesn’t matter if you fall in love with your room in the first place or it turns out to be something you may not like. As soon as you make it your own place, you would feel a lot better about it.

2. Talk to as many people as you need. Talk to the societies’ people, talk to our greenies/pinkies people, talk to your flatmates and start making friends. You will probably see these people for the next 3/4/5 years and hopefully be friends with them for a long time.

3. Enjoy the Welcome Week but also don’t forget you will start your term the week after.

And lastly, favourite fun fact: My name is a real give-away but those who don’t know me have a hard time figuring out where I am from…

Favourite Freshers’ Week moment: There are some funny moments on the nights out, as expected. I had a lovely lost 2nd year taking out his wallet, reaching for his bank card and proceeding to attempt to ring and talk to his friend using it.

Society recommendations: For me I love the community of ECU, the creativity of Razz my Berries and the novelty of beginners tap with Dance.

Favourite Ram basket meal: Chicken Bites and Curly Fries – Standard!

Give you three top pieces of advice to freshers:
