Valve founder Gabe Newell commenting on the recent layoffs

As many as 25 people have been fired from the company due not to performance issues but to a change in the company’s direction. Gabe Newell commented

“We don’t usually talk about personnel matters for a number of reasons. There seems to be an unusual amount of speculation about some recent changes here, so I thought I’d take the unusual step of addressing them. No, we aren’t canceling any projects. No, we aren’t changing any priorities or projects we’ve been discussing. No, this isn’t about Steam or Linux or hardware or [insert game name here]. We’re not going to discuss why anyone in particular is or isn’t working here.”

Whether or not any more massive changes will be made remains to be seen

Founder of Xbox claims last five years were “painful to watch”

A former Microsoft employee, who helped to create the original Xbox in 1999, explained in his blog that Microsoft has spent the last five years trying to turn the Xbox into a multimedia machine disregarding all the features and studios that made it great in the first place. Nat Brown further went on to explain that Microsoft lacks innovation and capitalising on new projects such as Kinect. The fundamental issue above all else is that Microsoft is just not making enough games.

He stated “Microsoft is living in a naive dream-world…Xbox just needs somebody with a brain and focus to get the product in order tactically before romping forward to continue the long-term strategic promise of an Xbox in every living room, connected to every screen.”

What do you think? Do you think Microsoft has gone the wrong way in making its console better or should it continue down the path it is going?
